With the objective of welcoming and academically orienting the newly admitted MME 24 batch, I initiated and planned a career-focused talk and discussion session featuring Dr. Jarin Tasnim Onti, an alumnus of the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (MME) 13”, BUET. The program was titled “MME Talks: Bridging Materials and Medicine” and was designed as part of the reception activities for MME 24.
The event commenced at 3:00 PM with a short introductory session, followed by a presentation delivered by Dr. Onti. Her talk was highly informative and addressed:
  • The requirements and preparation needed for applying to PhD programs
  •  Writing an effective Statement of Purpose (SOP) for multidisciplinary research.
  •  Key criteria universities consider when selecting PhD candidates
  • Common challenges faced during the PhD application process
  • An overview of her PhD research and her current postdoctoral work
As per the original plan, an extended interactive Q&A session followed the presentation. The session witnessed an overwhelming response, particularly from the MME 24 batch. Questions included detailed discussions on how her PhD research bridged materials science and neuroscience, strategies for applying abroad, and academic preparedness. A notable discussion focused on CGPA, where Dr. Onti motivated students by sharing her own experiences and encouraged them to continuously improve even after academic setbacks. She further advised students to engage in reading and writing scientific articles to strengthen their research profiles for international applications.
Although the event was initially planned and initiated by me under MME 23, I later coordinated with the senior members of the Material Advantage BUET Student Chapter to collaborate in organizing and promoting the program. This collaboration helped ensure wider outreach and appropriate recognition through an established academic platform.
After the formal conclusion of the event, several highly interested students engaged in further in-person discussions with Dr. Onti.
Participation Summary:
  • Total participants: approximately 70–75 students
  • Majority participation from MME 23 and MME 24
  • Around 10–12 students from MME 20,  MME 21 and MME 22
  • 4–5 students from the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), BUET
Food for participants from MME 23 and MME 24 was arranged by the students of MME 23, while the crest and guest refreshments* were arranged by the Material Advantage BUET Student Chapter.
The event was conducted smoothly and successfully, receiving very positive feedback from the participants.
Respectfully submitted,
